Colorbond roofing on the Gold Coast
Roof Gold Coast arranges Colorbond roofing for new roofs, re-roofs and extensions across the Gold Coast. That includes tile-to-steel conversions, re-sheeting old iron roofs and matching steel roofs on additions and patios. The work is carried out by independent local roofing contractors, quoted after an on-site inspection.
Three choices that matter
Steel grade. This is the one people skip. Standard pre-painted steel suits most suburbs; homes close to breaking surf face severe salt exposure and need a product designed for it, with fixings to match. BlueScope publishes guidance by distance from the coast. Beachfront homes from Coolangatta to The Spit are the obvious case, but sea spray travels further in strong onshore winds.
Profile. Corrugated has the classic look and suits older and character homes. Trapezoidal profiles shed water faster on lower pitches and long runs. Concealed-fix profiles give a clean line and fewer exposed screws. The minimum pitch for each profile is set by the manufacturer.
Colour. Lighter colours reflect more heat and keep the roof space cooler, which matters through a Gold Coast summer. Darker colours hide dirt and lichen better. Estates in places like Hope Island, Coomera or Varsity Lakes may have colour rules; check covenants or body corporate by-laws.
What a good Colorbond install includes
- Battens at the right spacing and fixed for the house's wind classification.
- A blanket under the sheets for heat and rain noise.
- Compatible screws and flashings, and no copper or lead runoff onto the steel.
- Neat flashings at walls, skylights and solar mounts, sealed with the right product.
- Swarf (metal filings from cutting) swept off the same day so it cannot rust stain the new roof.
That last point sounds minor, but rust spots from swarf are one of the most common complaints about new steel roofs.
Looking after a steel roof here
Near the coast, areas not rinsed by rain, like under eaves and around gutters, benefit from a hose-down every few months. Keep gutters clear of leaves and sand. Our guide to maintaining a roof after replacement covers the routine.
Price
Colorbond re-roof prices depend on area, pitch, product grade and access. Planning bands are on the Gold Coast roof cost guide.
Common questions on the inspection
Expect the contractor to ask a few things before they quote a Colorbond roof. How far is the house from the beach, and does it face the prevailing onshore wind? Is there solar on the roof now, or planned? Are there skylights, flues or air-conditioning penetrations that will need new flashings? Does the estate or body corporate have colour rules? Has the house had leaks along any particular wall? Each answer changes the specification, so it is worth having them ready. If the roof is being converted from tile, the contractor will also check how the old battens are fixed and whether the gutters and fascia are worth keeping.
